Olivier took me to Mendocino to celebrate my 50th birthday. I’d heard of Mendocino from friends, but you really can’t appreciate just how awesome it is until you visit it for yourself. I fell in love with Mendocino. I know, don’t we always feel like we want to move to the place we are visiting? I’m telling you, you will start planning your future move when you visit the area. First of all, the food is amazing. We didn’t have a mediocre meal here, everything was delicious. The town itself is like something out of a storybook and the place we stayed, MacCallum House was perfection.
Mendocino is roughly a 3 hour drive from the Bay Area, the drive north is very pretty. If you have time to kill, there are small towns along the way you could stop in. We stopped for lunch in Boonville and had a delicious lunch at Uneda eat.
I’m mad at myself, I didn’t really take a lot of pictures while we were there. I’m sure I will go back and if I do, I'll update this post. I just wasn’t in the headspace at the time to take pictures if I’m being completely honest. For that reason, I used some stock images a little farther down to show more of the town than I captured. I’ve hyperlinked the images to their rightful owner.
We stayed in the village room at MacCallum House. The only warning is the roof is slanted and I literally walked straight into it. Eyes open, sober and everything. Otherwise, it was perfection. It was walking distance to the water and town. The downtown is very walkable and there are plenty of shops to wander through. The stars are beautiful at night, too.
This is a view of how the town overlooks Mendocino Bay. We walked down here from MacCallum. There are foot trails that head in different directions with beautiful views of the bay and of the ocean. We also decided to check out a local beach near by and that was beautiful too. I don’t have a picture because that would have been too smart.
The view from our room.. come on, right? Take me back to here, please. I’m going to share some of the places we ate at below, I highly recommend checking them out.
These three are stock images from Getty Images. I’m linked them all as the source of the photo. Look at this town, just look at it.
Quick recap:
Stay at MacCallum house if you can, it’s beautiful and a great location.
We had pizza at The Brickery and it was delicious. They have a garden in the back with live music and tables, it’s a really great atmosphere.
We had dinner at Trillium one night and it was very good. The service was great and the outdoor patio is really pretty.
We spent an afternoon at Big River Beach, sitting in the sun and people watching.
Bring a camera and actually take pictures. Don’t be me.
